I was on youtube the other day just randomly searching for interesting videos. And this one about Twitter was in the featured videos. Since we’ve been talking alot about Twitter in our Online Magazine course, I had to check it out.

It made me realize that Twitter is not only for people who want to be updated about their work, or in their industry. Most of the people who use Twitter go on it just to be recognized. They want to feel as if they belong somewhere. I call it “cyberspace.” They post whatever they are doing in hopes that other people will pay attention to them. But here’s the thing, a lot of people don’t really care who you are. Especially on the internet.

Enough of me. Here’s the video and see it you agree with it the way I did.

Books to movies. Sometimes I like the idea. And sometimes I don’t. Books are a good read and they are able to stimulate a person’s imagination. Whereas movies give you a certain person’s imagination. It could be good to have a visual to start with. So where am I going with this?

A few days back, I saw the trailer of Angels and Demons. It is originally a book written by Dan Brown, the author of a best-selling book, The Da Vinci Code. It made me think back on all the books that had been turned into movies, like the Harry Potter series, the well-milked Twilight, The Reader, Coraline, PS I Love You, and the list goes on.

Back to my original point, most books that were turned to movies are quite the disappointment. When you read a scene in a book, then see it in a movie, it’s very different and not what you expected. I remembered reading The Da Vinci Code and my heart was racing because of all the excitement and thrill. It was one of the best books that I have ever read. But when I watched the movie, I was bored to death and fell asleep. The second time I watched it, I noticed that there were scenes in the movie that were not even in the book. The movie was an utter failure and disappointment. I’m not saying that I hate movies that were based on books. I just wish that the stories would closely follow the book.

Let’s just hope that Angels and Demons doesn’t disappoint.

The Amazon Kindle is a new step for the world of books. From print to screen, the Amazon Kindle is an amazing e-book reader. It makes it very convenient for readers to browse for books online and make online purchases. Readers do not have to walk in to bookstores and search for a specific book which lies somewhere among the countless bookshelves.

The Amazon Kindle is also very convenient for readers in a way that it is easy to carry and is very light. As for its readability, the Amazon Kindle is very easy on the eyes. The LCD doesn’t make it appear like a computer screen as those strain the eyes making it very hard to focus and read.

While it is small and lightweight, the Amazon Kindle is also very private as no one can see what you are reading. With this e-book reader, anyone can read a blog, articles from newspapers, even a full-length novel.

While it is an interesting piece of gadget to have, especially for people who like reading, there is also a bit of a downside (in my opinion).

Where is the fun in collecting the books? They say that a look at your book collection can also reflect a little bit about a person’s personality. For some people, collecting books is not only a hobby, but it is a lifestyle. And the Amazon Kindle would not fit into their daily lives. Don’t you think having a book collection would be something to be proud off?

There is also that search for the book. Some people like to walk into different bookstores in search for a particular book. And in that, they may also find other interesting books aside from the one they are looking for.

The Amazon Kindle does not offer that kind of experience for readers and book lovers. That’s why they are called “book lovers,” not “e-book lovers.”

Dallas Bergen has always been very passionate about music even at a very young age. His interest in music did not come so much from his parents but more from himself. He grew up in Regina, which has a rich cultural life in music. When his parents took notice of his interest in music, they put him into piano lessons. While Dallas still plays the piano, his passion lies in singing in choirs.
One of the biggest factors influencing him growing up was his best friend’s father. He was the choir teacher at their high school. Dallas joined the high school choir in eighth grade, and ever since then he has been singing in choirs. By the time Dallas was in 12th grade, he had become involved with the school music program and was also doing some vocal jazz. Dallas adds that he did some choir directing with eighth and ninth graders in his final high school year. During that time, he decided that he wanted a future in music: to be a musician or a music teacher. Dallas graduated high school in 1995 and went to university to study music education. He graduated from the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia in 2000.
Before settling in Toronto in 2005, Dallas wanted to travel to different countries—and he did. He went to Thailand, Taiwan, and South Korea among others and taught English. Later on, Dallas decided to stop traveling because he wanted to start his career as a musician. He explains that one of his biggest inspirations has been choirs for young adults of different cities in Canada, specifically the Kokopelli in Edmonton and Prairie Voices in Winnipeg. Seeing how the leaders of these groups brought young people to sing and make music together, Dallas was inspired to form Univox in 2005, wherein he is the co-founder and the artistic director. He shares that when he first started the choir, it was a bit slow going. Dallas also adds that during the choir’s first rehearsal, only one person showed up. But following that, Univox has expanded and now the group is about 40 people. Univox is currently in their fourth season and has gathered some success in Toronto. Click on the link to find out more about Univox.

Lucas Marchand, a close friend and a colleague to Dallas says, “Univox has been a great outlet for Dallas’s creative energy and passion for music and community.” Dallas also sings professionally for another group called the Nathaniel Dett Chorale. Here, he works with people from diverse musical and cultural backgrounds. “It’s really a lot of fun to work with people from different backgrounds with different talents that way, and sing such diverse music,” shares Dallas.
Aside from being in the Nathaniel Dett Chorale and being the artistic director of Univox, Dallas also serves as a church music director and works closely with the children and youth. “Dallas displays great and infectious passion for making music. His approach with choirs has been to always inspire them to reach their highest potential. And evidence of that is that the choir increasingly does so,” shares Shawn Newton, the minister of the church where Dallas is choir director.
Dallas teaches music in different public schools. He has conducted children’s choirs in a number of Toronto public schools as well. Dallas’s career as a musician is a combination of a few more different smaller jobs. “Put them all together, it’s a pretty great living that I enjoy very much,” Dallas says.
It shows that Dallas loves to share music with the community by performing, conducting and directing choirs. According to his friends and colleagues, Dallas is a superb musician and glows with emotion when on stage; and that is what set him apart as a performer and director.
“The most moving moments in my relationship with Dallas have been to hear him speak of the power of music to heal and build communities—and then to see him actually do it,” Newton says.

Below is a video of Dallas conducting the Univox Choir.

This is my web2.0 analysis on online magazines. I’ve chosen three to review.

Gulf News

The presence and location of the web2.0 features are located when you open up an article. It gives you choices from the RSS where you want to save it. Other web2.0 features are present through a radio feature which also includes streaming. Live weather news is also available on this site.

For the reader, the purpose and value of the reader-user is so that they can interact with the website. Not only can they read it, but they can save it and bookmark it whenever they want to go back to it again—especially if it’s one of their favourite articles. Same thing goes for publishers, editors, marketers and advertisers. They may want to go back to the site for references. But aside from that, this may also be a way for readers and users to keep coming back to the website.

Digg

The presence of the web2.0 features is also the same as in Gulf News. You click it and you will see the RSS feeds with the article. The RSS can also be spotted in the top right area of the webpage. This site also has video streaming.

There are many interesting articles here and readers would want to save it and share. They could use the RSS to bookmark it, whether in Delicious or in Facebook. It will also be easier for the readers, publishers, editors, marketers, and advertisers to locate their articles.

LiveScience

Immediately in this webpage, you can spot the RSS feeds at the top of the page. Video streaming is also present in this website. Like the Digg, LiveScience has many interesting articles which may want to be bookmarked or shared.

Publisher, editors, marketers, and advertisers use these features to get their works out there on the web. For editors and publishers, perhaps they bookmark those pages if they see errors in the articles that were published online. Then they come back to that page and correct the errors. For marketers and advertisers, it is probably a way for them to see how many people have seen their products or their ads.
